Becoming a Licensed Family Child Care Provider - 7 Easy Steps

1. Application and Orientation

Licensing Orientations are held throughout the State of California at a variety of sites, including Child Care Links, 6601 Owens Drive, Suite 100, Pleasanton CA 94588. Contact Community Care Licensing for a schedule of upcoming Orientations. Also, visit the Child Care Links calendar for licensing orientations hosted at the Child Care Links Pleasanton location.

Pre-registration is required for all events and orientations. Contact Community Care Licensing at 510. 622.2602 for information on how to register. There is a $25 registration fee. Walk-ins will not be admitted.

2. Complete Your Application

For all adults (18 years +) a CRIMINAL RECORD STATEMENT AND TB CLEARANCE must be completed. Proof of Immunizations must be provided if you reside in Alameda or Contra Costa County. Remember to make a copy of all forms in the application and include the $73.00 fee. Community Care Licensing will return any applications that are filled out incorrectly or if any information is missing.

3. Health and Safety Training

Complete 16 hours of Health and Safety training. You will need to enroll and register in advance, as classes fill up quickly. Child Care Links offers Health and Safety trainings. Please contact 925.417.8733 for more information.

4. Fingerprinting

Once your application has been approved, you will receive a letter informing you to complete the fingerprinting process. You may go to any Live Scan facility for fingerprinting( You may be required to make an appointment. Contact Child Care Links for referrals to local Live Scan offices. Make sure you have the Child Abuse Index form from your licensing orientation packet with you when getting fingerprinted.

5. Safety

Follow the instructions provided at the Licensing Orientation for making your home a safe and healthy environment for children. Community Care Licensing will check to be sure the home is safe for children age newborn to twelve years. Contact Child Care Links for a checklist ( that will help you prepare for your inspection.

The staff at Child Care Links can visit your site, to make suggestions on how to best prepare for a licensing inspection. This FREE service is available throughout the year. Contact Child Care Links 925.417.8733 to make an appointment.

6. Pre-Licensing visit

A Licensing Program Analyst (LPA) will call to schedule a home visit with you. An LPA from Community Care Licensing will inspect your home. If your home meets all health and safety requirements, the LPA will officially license you to care for children. The LPA will bring the forms you need to keep for your facility and children’s files, and explain how to keep them up-to-date. When you need additional forms, download them from the Community Care Licensing’s website (

If you have further paper work to complete, you will receive direction from the LPA on what you need to complete, in order to get your license.

If you have Live Scan approval and all forms have been successfully submitted, please wait up to three weeks for an LPA to contact you regarding your home visit.

7. Your License

It may take several weeks for your license to arrive from Community Care Licensing. In the meantime, the LPA should give you a print out at your pre-licensing visit. This document will allow you to contact Child Care Links and be added to our referral database. Resource and Referral Specialist: Gayel Machado 925.249.3906
