Frequently Asked Questions

Resource & Referrals FAQ’s

Q: What is the average infant rate per week for full time family child care in the Valley?

A: The average cost is $215 per week.  Parents should be aware that Child Care Links does not give out individual rates for providers, however, we do provide average costs by neighborhood within the cities of Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin.  Child Care providers are encouraged to consult with our referral counselors or request a copy of our Annual Report, where these costs are outlined.  Discussing how much you are going to charge with other child care providers is illegal, as it is considered “rate fixing”.

Q: What do I need to do in order to become a Family Child Care Provider?

A: The first step in obtaining your family child care license is to attend the Community Care Licensing orientation meeting.  This meeting is held on the first Tuesday of each month at the Child Care Links Pleasanton conference room from 9:30 to noon.  You will be provided with information from Community Care Licensing along with a Child Care Links services overview.  Child Care Links’ staff will provide support and information to help you through the licensing process.

Q: How do I get help paying for child care?

A: This will depend partially on what city you live in and whether or not you have received cash assistance in the past 2 years.  If you are a current CalWORKS participant, or you have been within the past 2 years, you will need to speak to a case manager at Child Care Links (consult our service area).  If you have not received any public assistance in the past 2 years, you will need to contact our Fremont Office at  (800) 642-7999.  They will determine your eligibility and place all eligible families on the waiting list.  Families are served in order of need and Child Care Links cannot give estimated length of time until you will receive a subsidy.  This depends on many factors such as funding and need level of families on the waiting list and is impossible to predict.

Community Services FAQ’S

Q: What is a “license exempt” child care provider?

A: A license exempt provider is a child’s relative or family friend who may not need a child care license from Community Care Licensing in order to provide child care services. License exempt providers are often grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters or cousins.

Q: Who attends the License Exempt Provider Orientation?

A: Any license exempt provider working for a Child Care Links parent participant is expected to attend a one-time, two-hour Orientation that covers quality child care topics such as health, safety, nutrition and child development. A Child Care Links Case Manager will schedule the license exempt provider for an Orientation date at the time of Intake or when the parent participant is up for recertification. Only the license exempt provider needs to attend the Orientation, but parents are welcome to attend if they are interested in learning more about quality child care.

Q: Who do I call if I can’t attend my scheduled Orientation date?

A: License exempt providers who are unable to attend a scheduled Orientation date should call Nicole Roman at (925) 417-8733.

SUBSIDY FAQ’S

Q: How do I apply for child care subsidy services?

A: In order to apply for the child care subsidy program, you must be income eligible and reside in Fremont, Union City, Newark, Sunol, Dublin, Pleasanton, or Livermore.  You may call our South County office at 1 800 642-7999 to determine your eligibility and to be placed on the Eligibility List.

Q: Who is eligible for the subsidy program?

A: Families that reside, or work and need child care in our service area, meet the income eligibility requirements and who have a need for services because they are working, in school, homeless, or under Child Protective Services Programs.

Q: How long do I have to wait before I am called?

A: We cannot tell you how long you will have to wait.  Enrollment is not done on a first come first serve basis.  Your position on the list is based on your income and your family size.  When we have openings, state regulations require us to enroll families who have the lowest income as well as meet the needs and requirements of the specific child care funds that are available.  (i.e., age, special needs, etc.)

Q: Can I choose who watches my child?

A: Parental choice is the focus of the Child Care Links Child Care Subsidy Program.  Parents are the best judge of what type of care is appropriate for their own child, therefore, parent’s will choose their own child care provider.
